Mark Hoppus

The pop punk band Blink-182 — known for its bathroom humor and sticky hooks — signed to MCA Records in 1996, and in 1997 exploded internationally with the multi-platinum selling Dude Ranch. • Washington State's premier pop/punk trio MxPx might very well be one of the most prolific rock groups going. As high school kids in 1993, they've graduated from cult indie label status to workhorse major label stalwarts with a track record that spans seven full-length albums, three compilations, 10 singles, nine fan club singles, four EPs, and one live album.

A significant part of their extremely hardcore and loyal following is due to the fact that MxPx are a Christian punk rock group, though it's more known than stated.

  • Swedish bassist Magnus Sveningsson began his career playing heavy metal, but feeling limited by the genre, switched to a confectionary form of pop music with his new project, The Cardigans. Formed in 1992, the band's debut, Emmerdale became a hit in Sweden in 1994 with the shimmering single "Rise & Shine."

  • While nu-metal bands Korn, Limp Bizkit and the Deftones made the genre popular, it was Southern California's (hed) P.E. that took metal and hip-hop two steps further. They incorporated spools of synthesizers and beats, mixed with drop-tuned guitar riffs and a gangsta-rap styled vocal approach.
